The big block Chevy sits just inches behind your head. "I can do this," you remind yourself. The lightson the tree flash yellow, then green. You unleash the engine, and instantly it delivers the power of 700 horses, 7500rpm of torque and fury. The acceleration is breathtaking. Your helmet is pressed deeply into the padded headrest. Without the proper training and mental preparation you'd probably quit. But for now your right foot stays buried in the throttle. 60 mph comes and goes in 1.8 seconds. Then 100. Then 150. And higher. You carefully guide the car straight down Pomona's black strip of asphalt. You fly past the finish line more than 200 feet per second, slam the throttle closed and go for the brakes. After binging the car to a slow speed, you turn off the racing surface and idle back to your pit area. The track is a quarter mile long and your smile a quarter mile wide.
