POMONA BEAUTIFICATION DAY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

The city of Pomona in its entirety celebrates its seventh annual Beautification Day May 11 and invites interested groups, organizations, businesses, families and individuals to participate.
With the city commemorating its 125th anniversary this year as well, organizers are encouraging a greater involvement throughout all levels of the community.  Co-coordinators Rick DeBruyne and Nancy Matarrita, both Pomona residents, lead a team of active community members who have been meeting since January to put together this city-wide event.  Pomona’s greatest asset is its people. Pomona artist Joshua Swodeck, who designed this year’s poster, fittingly coined the 2013 theme, One City – Many Hands.
A 7 a.m. event kickoff with Mayor Elliott Rothman and the City Council takes place at city hall before the cleanup begins at 8am.  For the next four hours, teams of volunteers will then tackle beautification projects like graffiti washing, community gardening, alley clearing, trash pickup, painting, decorating and yard cleanups.  Participating groups and organizations may identify and register their own project or be assigned to an existing project.
After finishing the hard work in the morning, volunteers will head over to Fairplex for a celebration barbecue from noon to 3 p.m.   The event, including entertainment, a health fair, beautification ideas, safety demonstrations and more, is open to anyone.  Lunch is free for pre-registered participants.
Fairplex and the San Gabriel Valley Volunteer Center are major financial sponsors of this year’s Beautification Day.  Large dumpsters are generously provided throughout the community by Athens, Burrtec, Valley Vista and Waste Management.  Starbucks, which had an active team at last year’s cleanup, provided a substantial gift to get the 2013 planning underway.  Additional support for this event is being provided by Pomona First Baptist Church, Lincoln Avenue Community Church, Pomona Youth and Family Master Plan, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, the Lions Club, city of Pomona, Pomona Unified School District, School of Arts and Enterprise, and Cal Poly Pomona.
Randi Marshall, president of A Slice in Time, donated an assortment of Pomona-based citrus crate label copies which will be sold to the community to raise funds for Beautification Day.   These will be on display at the Fairplex celebration event, along with displays showing the wonderful aspects of Pomona, put together by Bright Prospect students with assistance from Cal Poly Pomona students.
