2003 L.A. COUNTY FAIR CLOSES ON A HIGH NOTE
The 2003 L.A. County Fair’s 17-day run came to a close on Sunday, Sept. 28. The Fair enjoyed stellar weather, great crowds, a successful horse racing meet and more than 1.3 million guests that were treated to a variety of programming highlighted by the feature exhibit “High Flying Fun!” Fair dates were Sept. 12-28.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR HOMETOWN BUFFETS CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE CONTEST
The L.A. County Fair’s America’s Kids “Baking Fun” competition challenged children of all ages to test out their skills in the kitchen. During the Sept. 13 Chocolate Chip Cookie contest, sponsored by HomeTown Buffet Inc., children brought in their favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe along with some samples for judging. Awards were offered for first, second and third place winners, and an additional award was given to the sweepstakes winner of each age/class. Sweepstakes winners won a gift certificate from HomeTown Buffet for dinner for four and a chance to appear in next year’s America’s Kids Craft and Cookbook.

WINNERS OF L.A. COUNTY FAIRS PARENT-CHILD TABLESCAPING CONTEST ANNOUNCED
The race was on as the Parent-Child Tablescaping Challenge took place on Sept. 18 at the 2003 L.A. County Fair. Teams comprised of a parent and a child between the ages of 8 and 15 years old were given a themed box of supplies and twenty minutes to create the best tablescaping. This was the second year the Fair offered this contest.

A San Diego man and a Rancho Cucamonga woman nabbed first place in the George’s Cheesecake Contest on Sept. 21 at the L.A. County Fair. The Fair runs through Sept. 28.

CRUISE INTO THUNDER ALLEY AT THE 2003 L.A. COUNTY FAIR
Thunder Alley at the L.A. County Fair will help Fairguests reminiscence about nights spent cruising down the main drag with Car Club Cruises, a Corvette Birthday Bash and exhibits at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. The Fair is scheduled for Sept. 12-28.

GUESTS CAN WALK WITH THE ANIMALS AND SHOP AT RALPHS AT THE BIG RED BARN AT 2003 L.A. COUNTY FAIR
Teaching city-slickers to understand and appreciate the total concept of American agriculture is the goal of this year’s L.A. County Fair at Fairplex in Pomona. The Fair, which runs from Sept. 12-28, will feature a new attraction, The Big Red Barn, which is located in FairView Farm’s Barn 9A. The Big Red Barn will give kids and adults alike the opportunity to become acquainted with the natural behavior of different kinds of livestock from cows to hogs, donkeys, sheep and goats.

PRISON DAIRY WINS FOUR GOLD AWARDS AT L.A. COUNTY FAIR
(Tracy, CA) Milk from the Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) dairy in Tracy, operated by the Prison Industry Authority (PIA), won four gold awards and one silver award last week in the annual dairy products competition at the 2003 L.A. County Fair in Pomona. This is the third consecutive year the prison dairy has received awards for milk quality at the fair.

L.A. COUNTY FAIR TO BECOME SISTER FAIR WITH MEXICO PRODUCTION
In an exchange of cultural and educational enrichment, the L.A. County Fair is establishing a Sister Fair relationship with Feria Nacional de San Marcos, the National Fair of San Marcos, located in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

THE POTS JUST GOT A LITTLE SWEETER FOR TWO FAIRPLEX PARK SEPTEMBER STAKES RACES
Both the Barretts Debutante and the Barretts Juvenile will see increased purses in their 2003 renewals. Both are 6 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-olds who were sold at Fairplex’s Barretts Equine Sales Complex. The Debutante is for fillies, the Juvenile for colts and geldings.
