L.A. COUNTY FAIR HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 12, OPENING DAY
OPENING DAY…The L.A. County Fair kicks off its 81st anniversary with opening day ceremonies at 10 a.m. Friday at The Big Red Barn in FairView Farms for the first day of a 17-day run. The Fair continues through Sunday, Sept. 28. The Fair opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on weekends. Closing time is 10 a.m., except on Friday and Saturday, when it remains open until midnight.

WALKING TOURS OF L.A. COUNTY FAIR AVAILABLE SEPT. 13
Kitsch-culture archivist-humorist-author and “histo-tainer” Charles Phoenix will offer a “History and Kitsch Tour of the L.A. County Fair” Saturday, Sept. 13, during the opening weekend of the Fair.

JUNIOR LIVESTOCK AUCTION MOVES TO SATURDAY TO HELP DRAW MORE BUYERS
The selling of prize winning livestock raised by 4-H members, FFA members and college students is deep seated in tradition at the L. A. County Fair in Pomona, but it will be held on a Saturday for the first time during its tenure in an effort to attract more buyers. Over the past years it was held on a weekday following the culmination of the junior market livestock judging. It is slated for Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. in the Barrett’s Sales Pavilion located at the Barrett’s Equine Sales Complex of the Fairgrounds.

LEGEND OF THE MOON CELEBRATION AT THE L.A. COUNTY FAIR
Your pulse pounds as the sound fills the air, steadily growing in intensity as you clench your fists in anticipation. The crowd watches in rapt fascination, ever growing in number, eager to see what’s coming their way. You hear a gasp, and a squeal of excitement as the thunderous sound grows louder. It’s getting nearer. Your eyes widen in excitement as you catch your first glimpse of beating drumsticks and colorful uniforms. At last it’s before you, as the streets of the L.A. County Fair come to vibrant life with the sound of drums and the dancing of Asian dragons. The Asian & Pacific Islander Festival has returned for the sixth year in a row but this year it will have a new look!

FAIRPLEX PARK HAS A RICH HISTORY
In 1933, pari-mutuel wagering was legalized in California. On Sept. 15 of that year the Pomona track was the first to present pari-mutuel wagering on thoroughbred horse racing in Southern California.

STUTE FIRST INDUCTEE INTO FAIRPLEX PARK HALL OF FAME
During a career that has spanned more than 50 years at the racetrack, Mel Stute has grown to become one of the most popular, adored and dedicated trainers in southern California. At Fairplex Park in Pomona, however, he is simply a legend. On Sunday, Sept. 28, the final day of Fairplex’s annual summer race meeting, the 76-year-old Stute will be inducted as the first member of the Fairplex Park Racing Hall of Fame.

LOS COLORES CAT CLUB SHOW PRANCES INTO FAIRPLEX AUG. 16-17
Cats with folded ears, cats with big ears, cats with short tails, cats with curly hair and even cats with no hair will take over Fairplex during the Los Colores Cat Club Show Saturday, Aug. 16, and Sunday, Aug. 17.
