The L.A. County Fair likes to do things up big – the biggest Ferris wheel in the western hemisphere, big Monster Trucks, big Texas-sized donuts. So, why not a Big Baking Recipe contest? George Geary’s Big Baking Recipe contest was held Wednesday, Sept. 19, with 18 entries. Participants had to create any baked item using an original recipe and ingredients readily found at any local store. Receiving first place was Patricia Lapezio of San Diego with her Tropical Carrot Cake. Lapezio received a rosette and a $200 Williams-Sonoma gift card. In second place was Kathleen Davies-Morris of Chino and her Autumn Crisp. She received a rosette and a $50 Williams-Sonoma gift card. Taking third place was Monine Zerbey of West Covina and her Chocolate Mint Torte. She received a rosette and a $25 Williams-Sonoma gift card. All contestants also received a copy of Geary’s Big Book of Baking, from which the contest received its name. Geary is the coordinator of Culinary Styles, the Fair’s food division. When he not at the Fair, he teaches full-time across the country at culinary schools and sponsors culinary adventures to France, Italy and Belgium.
Judges based their decisions on taste, originality, appearance and ease of preparation. For more information on the L.A. County Fair, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com. rc=http://
