Hot is the best way to describe the entries into the Tamale! Tamale! Tamale! contest, sponsored by Univision, Sept. 16 at the L.A. County Fair. And we’re not just talking spicy but luscious in presentation and style. Savory and sweet were the two categories. Recipes had to be original. Judges based their decision on taste, originality, appearance and ease of preparation. Taking first place in the savory category was Christopher Lopez of La Verne with his chile verde and pork tamales. He received a $200 Williams-Sonoma gift card and a rosette. In second place was Cassandra Campos of Whittier with her green chile and chicken tamales. She received a $50 gift card to Williams-Sonoma. Coming in third was Cassandra’s mother, Elsa Campos of Whittier, with her red chile and vegetable tamales. She was given a $25 Williams-Sonoma gift card. No awards were given in the sweet category.
