The L.A. County Fair is spotlighting local heroes through its Community Days/Community Heroes celebrations. The Fair and the Los Angeles Times will pay tribute to local volunteers efforts on behalf of their communities. Youth and adult heroes from 18 local communities will appear at the Stage at Park Square. Parades begin at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends. The L.A. County Day parade will be on the first Sunday of the Fair, Sept. 7, at noon.

Thirty-two marching bands from local high schools take to the parade route at the Fair each weekday through Sept. 24 before facing a squadron of judges to show what they got. The grand champion will be named Friday, Sept. 26. The winning band will receive a cash prize of $5,000, Second Place will receive $3,000, and Third Place will receive $2,000. The L.A. County Fair runs Sept. 5 28, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred racing is September 5 22, closed Tuesdays. For more information, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com.
