Welcome to one of the most comforting areas of the L.A. County Fair, but also one of the most enlightening, entertaining and impressive. The Culinary Styles Gourmet Kitchen, presented by Sparkletts, is the place for cooking, baking, tasting and entering fine food fare into a contest or competition, which are lively and non-stop. Contests and competitions are full of traditional Fair fun, like winning a blue ribbon. Check out some of the popular competitions and contests: -New! Dessert contest, Friday, Sept. 26, creating time 7 – 8 p.m., judging 8 p.m. -Stick with Canola Oil Fry It For The Fair contest, Thursday, Sept. 25, 7 p.m. -Ghirardelli Chocolate Championship, Saturday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. -Tamale! Tamale! Tamale! contest, Sunday, Sept. 14, 1 p.m. -The Perfect Guacamole and Salsa Dip contest, Sunday, Sept. 14, 7 p.m. -George Geary’s Cheesecake Recipe contest, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. -Gingerbread House contest, Saturday, Sept. 13, 1 p.m. -Blue Ribbon Chocolate Chip Cookie and Brownie contest, Saturday, Sept. 13, 7 p.m.
A perennial favorite, the Great American SPAM Championship, spotlighting the greatest SPAM appetizers, is Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. There are categories for kids and adults. Incorporating the entire Fair, Run For The Fair contest requires participants to run onto the fairgrounds and purchase an item or items for $10 or less to combine with four items they bring from home. Fleischmann’s Yeast Bake for the Cure is back Sunday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. For each entry, ACH Food Companies will contribute $10 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer awareness campaign. Culinary Styles hosts several cooking demonstrations throughout the Fair, including demos by Culinary Styles coordinator and leading chef George Geary. Past ribbon winners also share their skills in Cooking With The Winners. The L.A. County Fair runs Sept. 5 – 28, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
