KALOOKAN YEAR HELPS SPARK CARRYOVER

Pomona, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2008) -- Fairplex Park went into a $2 pick six carryover mode for Saturday when Kalookan Year ($14.20) , won the $64,350 Pio Pico Stakes,  and Tikolino ($45.80) scored on the undercard on Friday.

The carryover pool, the third of the Pomona session, for Saturday's 13-race program is $36,596.

Ridden by jockey Alonso Quinonez, Kalookan Year was seventh and next20to last in the early going of the Pio Pico Stakes, while the 4-5 favorite Overly Tempting was leading the 6   furlong dash with sharp fractions of 22.31, 45.20 and 1:10.49.

At the top of the stretch Overly Tempting still led by a length, but shortened stride in the final half-furlong, fading to fourth.

Meanwhile, Quinonez was on the move with Kalookan Year who rallied three wide into the lane to win by 2   lengths over Royal Kleven with Kalookan Dancer third in 1:17.51.

"I had a perfect trip," said Quinonez. "I was pretty far back down the backstretch, but I knew they were going fast and I thought they might back up."

For winning trainer Victor Garcia, it was his first stakes victory since taking over the stable from his father, Juan Garcia, who retired recently.

"It's a lot of responsibility (running a stable of race horses)," and I had a very good teacher," said an excited Garcia. "It's great to win the first one (stakes). I hope it's not the last."

*Speedin Excess has been installed as the 8-5 favorite to win Saturday's $130,000-estimated Barretts Debutante, a 6   furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies.

The Debutante is restricted to horses20that went through the sales ring at one of four Barretts horse auctions.

Speedin Excess is a maiden who has started only once. In that outing at Del Mar on Aug. 23, she set a very fast early pace, but weakened near the wire to miss by a neck in 1:10 2/5 for the six furlongs.

"Going into the race, she's perfect," said Ted West, father and assistant to trainer Ted H. West. "If she gets a good trip, she's going to be awfully tough to beat."

Also set to start are Miss Dixie Dancer, Listisimo, Malusita, Pistoia, Victory Dancer, Emba U.T.K., Shouldabeenmaizey, Makasi and Trifecta King, winner of the C inderella Stakes at Hollywood Park in May.

Bar Far and Rocket Candy are marooned on the also-eligible list.

*No one has tabbed all the winners in the $1 win pick nine for the seventh consecutive day and the carryover pool has reached $33,589.
