With childhood obesity having tripled in the last 30 years, promoting exercise and a healthy lifestyle is essential to children’s wellbeing. Olympic gold medalist and Pomona High School graduate Bob Seagren and his company, International City Racing, understand this, and that is why they are encouraging families and kids to register for the 5K walk/run and Kids 1-mile Fun Run that are part of the upcoming inaugural L.A. County Half Marathon Dec. 13 at Fairplex. “Part of our mission with the L.A. County Half Marathon is to promote healthy communities,” Seagren said. “The statistics regarding childhood obesity are staggering. We want to encourage kids to be active. Being a native of Pomona, I am extremely excited to bring the Half Marathon here and encourage healthy living. Running is extremely popular right now, and it’s a sport that requires little or no cost, so it’s readily available to everyone.”
Parents can register their children for the Kids 1-mile Fun Run or can register the entire family (strollers welcome!) for the 5K walk/run. Both routes will be run on the grounds of Fairplex. The 13-mile half marathon will stretch into the surrounding communities of Pomona, La Verne and San Dimas. Marathon weekend includes a Health & Fitness Expo, in conjunction with Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, at Fairplex, which is free to the public. On marathon day, friends and family can gather at the Finish Line Festival at Grandstand Pavilion at Fairplex, and celebrate with the runners with live music, food and fun.
