Make Music for Me, a graduate of the prestigious Barretts Equine Limited’s 2009 March sale of selected 2-year-old thoroughbreds in training, will be in the field of 20 when the starting gate opens for Saturday’s 2010 Kentucky Derby.
The colt won this year’s Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita and was second to Kentucky Derby favorite Lookin at Lucky in the Del Mar Futurity and Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar. He ran third to Lookin at Lucky and another Derby starter, Noble’s Promise, in the Hollywood Futurity and has earned $262,260 to date. Make Music for Me was purchased for $95,000 at the March sale from consignor Eddie Woods as agent.
The 3-year-old is trained by Alexis Barba; Joel Rosario will be in the reins. Make Music for Me and Sidney’s Candy will both make their career debuts on dirt at Churchill Downs.
Barretts grads are not strangers to the big race in Kentucky; 2005 Barretts March Sale graduates and top contenders in 2006’s Kentucky Derby included 3-year-olds Brother Derek, Point Determined and Sinister Minister; Denis of Cork, a 2007 grad, ran third in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. According to published reports 12 of the starting 20 horses in the Derby were purchased at public auctions by their current owners with prices ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to just $10,000. Barretts Equine Limited and Finish Line Sports Grill are located at Fairplex in Pomona at Gate 12 on White Avenue.
Finish Line will host its second Kentucky Derby party, with more than 70 big screen TVs, electronic wagering, entertainment and the most exciting two minutes in horse racing. Doors open at 7 a.m.
