Six continents were represented in the 2010 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits competition, showing the breadth of interest in the prestigious event. The competition celebrated 71 years of recognizing the best wines from around the world. With a reputation for high judging standards and commitment to wine education, the competition annually draws thousands of entries.
“I am not surprised to see the countries from which we pull entries,” said Mary Ellen Cole, competition organizer and cellar master. “What is interesting now is to see that wineries from countries who’ve never been represented before are entering, like Greece.”
The diverse representation isn’t just in the wine competition. The Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition had entries from Palestine this year. “With each shipment of entries that comes in each day, it’s exciting to see where they are coming from,” Cole said.
North America led in entries this year, with many coming from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Australia had a good showing with 94 from there and 31 from New Zealand. South American countries represented included Argentina and Chile. Europe was also well represented with wines from France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Japan was the only Asian country, as was South Africa for Africa. For more information, visit the Web site at www.lawinecomp.com.
