OPERETTA ITALIANO ROMPS IN FAIRPLEX FEATURE RACE

POMONA, CA, SEPT. 23, 2010-Operetta Italiano led from start to finish under David Flores and was never seriously threatened, drawing off through the stretch to win Thursday's $33,320 feature race at Fairplex Park by 4 3/4 lengths.

L'Enchanteresse, with Omar Berrio filling in for ailing Martin Pedroza, finished second, followed by Sweetsouthernqueen and Fair Kisses. Sky Chant was scratched, reducing the field to four starters. There was no show betting in the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares. Time for the distance under 122 pounds was 1:45.35.

Operetta Italiano, a 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Rossini trained by Bill Spawr, paid $5.60 and $2.80 for her fourth win from 16 lifetime starts. She earned $20,400 for owner Michael Huscroft.

Pedroza, fighting stomach illness, took off his scheduled eight mounts Thursday. However, Fairplex Park's career leader in victories with 641 is well on his way to his 12th consecutive riding title at the track with 35 wins.

Saint Isabelle, a speedy daughter of 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam, is the 8-5 morning line favorite in Friday's feature, the $50,000 Palomares Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. First post time for the 12-race program is 1 p.m.
