FAIRPLEX STORY: BAZE WINS FIVE AT FAIRPLEX, INCLUDING BARRETTS DEBUTANTE
For Immediate Release
POMONA, Calif., Sept. 21--Last Kiss, a $17,000 Barretts purchase, won the
$102,600 Barretts Debutante at Fairplex Park on Saturday, breaking her maiden
in the race and giving jockey Tyler Baze victory No. 4 on a five-victory day.
Baze, who will be 20 on Oct. 19, won the 12th and final race aboard Mystic
Too.
Last Kiss, a California-bred daughter of Slew's Royalty trained by Bill
Spawr, broke well from the No. 2 post position after less than quick
beginnings in her first two starts. Baze sent her to the lead on the far turn
in the 6 1/2 furlong race for 2-year-old fillies and she held on resolutely
through the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
Sky's Snow and 9-10 favorite Ionia finished in a dead-heat for second, a neck
in front of Leniently. A Reel Tizzy, Lucky Turk, Midterm Habit, King of the
Cats, Spinning at Dawn and Four Tens At Once completed the order of finish.
Last Kiss covered the distance in 1:18.28 under 113 pounds and earned
$56,430. She paid $13.80 to win.
"Bill (Spawr) said she had been breaking slow," said Baze, who enjoyed the
best day at the Los Angeles County Fair oval since David Flores won six races
in one day twice in 1992. "He said send her out of there, see where you are
and play the race how it comes up. That's what we did. We got through on the
rail down the backside and she tried really hard. I never stopped riding."
Spawr said Last Kiss will be pointed to the California Cup at Oak Tree at
Santa Anita on Nov. 2.
Elan, a smart second at Del Mar in his maiden outing on Aug. 26, is the 9-5
morning line favorite for the 13th running of Sunday's $100,000 Barretts
Juvenile for 2-year-old colts and geldings at 6 1/2 furlongs. A $100,000
purchase at the Barretts March sale, Elan is a California-bred son of Wolf
Power trained by Christopher Paasch. The field in post position order: Elan,
Goncalino Almeida, 9-5; Love When You City, Tyler Baze, 5-1; Charmer Baron,
Matt Garcia, 3-1; Taliano, Danny Sorenson, 8-1; and Cheverly Gold, Martin
Pedroza, 2-1. All have been assigned 113 pounds.
First post time daily is 12:30 p.m.
