Time to break out your green shirts, sweaters, ties, hats and face paints! The 9th Annual Los Angeles County Irish Fair and Celtic Festival, the fun-packed pre St. Patrick’s Day celebration,, pens Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 12-13) at the Fairplex in Pomona. Over 2000 performers are featured presenting the best in traditional and contemporary Celtic music, song, dance and pageantry.
Headlining over 60 shows are Wrath of McGrath, Skelipin, The Mulligans, Anita and the Yanks, Twilight Lords, Black Top Blaggers and The Black Rose Band. Also appearing are Chris Colt, The Green Ashes, Knockabouts, Emerald Society and 42nd Highlanders. Dance groups performing include the McCartan Irish Dancers, Royal Scottish Dancers and fair favorites the Cripple Creek Cloggers, who’s exciting dance numbers have long been crowd favorites.
Highlighting the colorful Irish Pride Parade daily at noon are Celtic warriors, artisans and entertainers from Ancient Irish Village, one of the fair’s most popular attractions. The village depicts Ireland of old and includes blacksmiths tooling swords, craftsman making leather goods, dressmakers and dozens of strolling musicians, singers, magicians, poets and actors.
Children’s Leprechaun Kingdom offers such family entertainment as carnival rides, games, freckle contests and story tellers. Nearby are sheep herding and Connamara pony exhibitions. Visitors can also trace family heritage and obtain travel information at the Celtic Cultural Center and shop for imported clothing and food items at the Irish Marketplace.
For hungry appetites, food stalls will be serving up corn beef sandwiches, bangers and giant turkey legs, along with hot dogs, fries and burgers. Traditional corn beef and cabbage and Irish beverages are served at the Fine Dining Pavilion.
