FAIRPLEX STORY: OUTSIDER TALIANO BREAKS MAIDEN IN BARRETTS JUVENILE AT FAIRPLEX
For Immediate Release
POMONA, Calif., Sept. 22--Taliano, a $52,000 Barretts purchase who finished
fifth in his only previous start, unleashed a strong stretch kick to win the
13th running of the $90,665 Barretts Juvenile by four lengths at Fairplex
Park on Sunday.
Ridden by Danny Sorenson and conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van
Berg, Taliano finished fifth in his lone start, at Del Mar, beaten 4 1/2
lengths going five furlongs on Aug. 31.
"I was very high on this colt," Van Berg said. "I don't push my 2-year-olds.
I give them plenty of time to develop. I thought he'd be closer at Del Mar
and I was a little discouraged, but when he galloped out like he did I was
happy with him."
Elan, the even-money favorite, finished second under Goncalino Almeida.
Charmer Baron, Cheverly Gold and Love When You City completed the order of
finish in the compact field 2-year-old colts and geldings.
Taliano earned $51,942 for owners Joe and Lola Sample and paid $17.80 to win.
Time for 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track was 1:17.57 under 113 pounds.
Martin Pedroza, the all-time leading rider at the Los Angeles County Fair
track with 338 victories, won three races on the tie to tie Tyler Baze for
the meet lead at 16 each with seven days remaining.

the 5-2 morning line favorite for the 41st edition of Monday's
$50,000-guaranteed CTBA Marian Stakes for 3-year-old California-bred fillies
at 1 1/16 miles. Trained by Craig Dollase, Shalini is coming off five
