FAIRPLEX STORY: EX-KING FLORES RETURNS TO FAIRPLEX TO RIDE REBA'S GOLD IN HINDS INVITATIONAL
For Immediate Release
Contact: Ed Golden
David Flores, who set a single meet record of 48 victories at Fairplex Park
in 1991 and who was the career leader until displaced by Martin Pedroza,
returns to the Los Angeles County Fair meet on Sunday to ride Reba's Gold in
the $100,000 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap.
Flores has gone on to greater glory since dominating the bullring at Pomona
where he captured six riding titles, including five in a row from 1990
through 1994. He has 289 career victories, second to Pedroza's 338.
Reba's Gold, who races for the Creston Farms of "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek,
is a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Slew o' Gold trained by Dan Hendricks.
Flores rode Reba's Gold to a third-place finish at Del Mar in his last race
in the Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap on Sept. 2.
"We're set for Sunday," Hendricks said. "He blew out great. He worked an easy
five (eighths at Santa Anita) earlier on the training track. He handled the
turns, we've got Flores to ride, so we're all set. We're just waiting on the
weights and to see who's running. We're happy to run here and have some fun
with him."
Reba's Gold is a winner of five of 25 career starts with earnings of
$353,212.
"I'm not concerned about his handling this track," Hendricks said. "He's got
speed and he handles the turns. He's trained on the short training track and
he's got speed to be in position. It looks like a good spot to win a nice
little stake with him."
FAIRWELLS: Agent Richie Silverstein said he would appeal any forthcoming
suspension of Martin Pedroza for his disqualification from first to sixth
aboard Fab Do in Tuesday's third race . . . Pedroza captured the featured
Bangles and Beads Stakes Tuesday to temporarily tie for the riding lead, but
Baze came back in the final race to post a $35.40 victory aboard first-time
starter Road to Mortlock and regained the lead, 18-17. Matt Garcia is four
back in third with 13 victories . . . Doug O'Neill leads the trainers with
six wins. Wesley Ward and Juan Garcia share second with five . . . Consistent
F J's Pace, trained by O'Neill, has been assigned top weight of 121 pounds
for Sunday's 62nd edition of the $50,000-guaranteed Governor's Cup Handicap.
In all, 12 horses were nominated to the 6 1/2 furlong race for 3-year-olds
and up.
