For Immediate Release
LOCAL POLITICIANS TO READ TO PRESCHOOL CHILDREN AT FAIRPLEX, CELEBRATE WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD

State Senator Nell Soto and Assemblywoman Gloria Negrete McLeod will visit the Fairplex Child Development Center on Friday, April 11, for the CDC’s annual “Week of the Young Child” celebration.

Both Soto and McLeod will read to preschool children at 9 a.m. as an affirmation of the importance of reading. Reading to and with a child is the #1 activity parents can do to insure their child becomes a reader. The children will present the two with a special token of appreciation.

April is “Month of the Young Child,” sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. For more than 30 years, “Month of the Young Child” has been celebrated with the purpose of focusing public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Regarded as one of the top facilities of its kind in California, the Child Development Center at Fairplex provides a variety of childcare and developmentally appropriate experiences for infants, toddlers and preschoolers from 6 weeks old to kindergarten age. The University of La Verne and the Los Angeles County Fair Association support the center. The center serves families of varying income levels and needs, including children with disabilities. Fairplex, the University of La Verne, parent tuition, state and federal funding and private donations support programs. In November 2001, the CDC received an outstanding review and a special commendation from the California Department of Education for its classroom practices, administrative organization and fiscal responsibility.

For more information about the April 11 event or photo opportunities, call the Communications department at Fairplex. For information on the CDC, call (909) 623-3899 or visit the Web site at www.fairplex.com.
