Michael Apstein, a freelance wine writer living in Newton, Mass., contributes regularly to The Boston Globe. In 2000, he received a James Beard Foundation Journalism Award for his writing. Since 1980, his wine articles have appeared in a variety of local and national magazines and newspapers such as The Wine News, Boston Magazine, The Boston Phoenix, News West just to name a few. He is a well-respected wine educator who has taught at the Boston Center for Adult Education for 20 years. Dr. Apstein judges frequently at national and international wine competitions including the Dallas Morning News Wine competition. Dr. Apstein is an assistant professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Division of Gastroenterology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He lectures and writes frequently about wine and health.
Dr. Hans P. Backhoff of Ensenada, Mexico, is co-owner and winemaker of Monte Xanic Winery in Ensenada. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in food science from Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and received a PhD in food science from the University of Nottingham in England. He is a member of the Institute of Food, the Society of Enology and Viticulture and of the Wine Broderhood of Baja, CA.
Heidi P. Barrett of Calistoga, CA, grew up in a winemaking family and graduated from UC Davis in 1980 with a degree in fermentation science. She is currently winemaker for Screaming Eagle, Revana, Amuse Bouche, Jones Family, Paradigm Winery, Showket, Lamborn Family, Barbour Vineyards, Lynch and her own La Sirena. Her husband, Bo, is winemaker at Chateau Montelena. They have two daughters, Remi, 16, and Chelsea, 14.
Jean T. Barrett is a Los Angeles-based writer on wine, spirits, food and travel. Her articles have appeared in Wine Spectator, Westways, Sky (Delta Airlines), Buzz, the Los Angeles Times and many other publications.
