The distinctive racing calls of native Australian Michael Wrona will resonate throughout the Fairplex Park grandstand on Sunday, Sept. 28, filling in for the familiar voice of Trevor Denman. Denman will be doing duty at Oak Tree on the closing day of the L.A. County Fair’s 17-day racing meet. This year Oak Tree and the L.A. County Fair agreed to run overlapping race cards on Sunday, Sept. 28, the Fair’s closing day. Four major preps for the Breeders’ Cup will be run at Oak Tree in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup, which Oak Tree will host Oct. 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Fairplex equine manager George Bradvica said of the addition of Wrona, “We’re thrilled that Michael is available on our closing day. It’s going to be an exciting program for racing fans and Michael’s participation will be consistent with the quality we bring to our racing fans and to our facility.”
Wrona splits his time between calling races at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas and New Orleans Fair Grounds in Louisiana. He is a 20-year veteran of the sport of kings, having begun his career at the Kilcoy County Fair near Brisbane, Australia. He has worked at Hollywood Park, Bay Meadows, Golden Gate Fields and Arlington racetracks. Citing his career highlights are two of the biggest events in racing in the last decade. Wrona called the race at Arlington Park when Cigar tied the great Citation’s modern day record in 1996 and he was at the helm at Hollywood Park in 1999 when Laffit Pincay equaled Bill Shoemaker’s win record.
Wrona said, “I’m absolutely delighted to be returning to Southern California for the final day of the Fairplex Park meeting.”
Fairplex Park horse racing is in its 65th season with dates concurrent with the L.A. County Fair, Sept. 12-28. The track will feature 17 days of thoroughbred racing, with 18 stakes races throughout the meeting. On the closing Sunday the $50,000 Governor’s Cup for 3-year-olds and up and the prestigious $100,000 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap, honoring the Fair Association’s late president and chief executive officer will get the nod.
