A number of contests for rabbits and cavies will be offered during this year’s L.A. County Fair. The fair is scheduled for Sept. 12-28.
The Open Rabbits competition, scheduled for Sept. 12-15, will be accepting entries until Aug. 25. The Open and Junior Cavies competition is scheduled for Sept. 16-18. Cavies competition entries will be accepted until Sept. 2. A $2 fee per entry per class is required. The fees must be accompanied by the breed, variety, sex, age, leg band/ ear tattoo number, division and class, along with the social security number and signature of the exhibitor. Open exhibitors must be present to carry their rabbits to the judging table or make arrangements for them to be carried. The Fair will not provide carriers.
The Junior Market Rabbits competition is planned for Sept. 24-28. Entries close Sept. 2. The Junior Rabbits competition will be held Sept. 19-23 and entries will be accepted until Sept. 8. Exhibitors must feed and water their animals when cooped. Fair personnel will feed and water thereafter.
A Rabbit and Cavy Showmanship for youth ages 6 to 18 will be held Sept. 20. There are five divisions in the Rabbit Showmanship and three Cavy Showmanship divisions. The Rabbit Showmanship will be immediately after the Junior Rabbit Breed judging. The Cavy Showmanship will immediately follow the Rabbit Showmanship. The contestant must own the rabbit or cavy entered. There is no entry fee to participate. Trophies will be awarded for various honors.
A Rabbit Skillathon for youngsters ages 8 to 18 is scheduled for Sept. 20, immediately after the Cavy Showmanship. Exhibitors are tested on their basic knowledge, including animal part identification, breed identification and safe handling and caging. There is no fee to participate.
