L.A. COUNTY FAIR HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 12, OPENING DAY

OPENING DAY…The L.A. County Fair kicks off its 81st anniversary with opening day ceremonies at 10 a.m. Friday at The Big Red Barn in FairView Farms for the first day of a 17-day run. The Fair continues through Sunday, Sept. 28. The Fair opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on weekends. Closing time is 10 a.m., except on Friday and Saturday, when it remains open until midnight.

KINDER.SIMPLER.FUNNER….The theme of this year’s L.A. County Fair is “Kinder.Simpler.Funner.” It reflects a light-hearted departure from the normally fast pace of day-to-day living.

ONE-BUCK BARGAIN…Admission to the Fair is just $1 all day Sept. 12, thanks to the Los Angeles Newspaper Group $1 Opening Day Celebration. Kids ages 5 and younger are admitted free everyday.

FLY BY…A B1 Bomber from Edwards Air Force Base will fly over the L.A. County Fair between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. Friday in honor of the Fair’s High Flying Fun! exhibit, a celebration of the 100th anniversary of powered flight. The bomber will glide over Brackett Air Field at 500 feet to Fairplex 7A, the building that houses High Flying Fun!, then shoot up straight into “max thrust climb.”

SLIPPIN’ INTO DARKNESS…Kicking off the Fair’s evening End of Summer Concert Series is the music group WAR. For nearly 30 years, WAR has entertained music lovers with its Afro-Cuban, jazz-funk sound. The band performs at the Los Angeles Newspaper Group Grandstand Stage at 8 p.m.

OPENING PREMIERE PARTY…Tonight the Fair hosts the Premiere Party for special guests and at the same time raises funds for the Fairplex Education Foundation to support year-round education programs for children. Held among the flora of the Flower and Garden Pavilion, guests will get an exclusive look at the pavilion’s theme “Influences of the Orient – The Art of Floral Design.”

HORSE RACING…Horse racing kicks off Friday at the Fairplex Park Budweiser Grandstand with the first post at 12:30 p.m. Thoroughbred racing is scheduled every day through Sept. 28. Grandstand admission is free with a general admission ticket to the Fair. Box seats are $3.

COMMUNITY DAYS – POMONA…The city of Pomona will be honored at the Community Days Celebration at the L.A. County Fair on opening day.

BURSTING IN AIR…Fireworks, presented by Cal Spas, will delight Fairguests every night of the Fair at 10 p.m.

BLUESY...The L.A. County Fair Blues Festival gets under way Friday and lasts through Sunday. Presented by Yesteryears, the festival takes place at The Stage in Park Square. You won’t want to miss the fun as popular blues bands rock the house with the upbeat, kickin’ blues music performed late into the night.

MAUI WOWIE…Fridays are Aloha Fridays at Fairplex Park Budweiser Grandstand. Wear a Hawaiian shirt, get a free box seat for the horse races.
