Both the Barretts Debutante and the Barretts Juvenile will see increased purses in their 2003 renewals. Both are 6 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-olds who were sold at Fairplex’s Barretts Equine Sales Complex. The Debutante is for fillies, the Juvenile for colts and geldings. The purse for the Debutante, to be run Saturday Sept. 20, has been set at $118,800. The 2002 Debutante, won by Taliano for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, was worth $102,600. The boys will take their turn in the Barretts Juvenile on Sunday Sept. 21, with a new purse of $133,150. Last year’s race, won by Last Kiss and trainer Bill Spawr, was valued at $90,665. The increased purses are based on a 10-horse field, and will change according to the number of entrants. It includes nominator awards. The races, each in their 14th running in 2003, will be a featured part of the 17 straight days of live racing at Fairplex Park starting Sept. 12.
