The L.A. County Fair’s America’s Kids “Baking Fun” competition challenged children of all ages to test out their skills in the kitchen. During the Sept. 13 Chocolate Chip Cookie contest, sponsored by HomeTown Buffet Inc., children brought in their favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe along with some samples for judging. Awards were offered for first, second and third place winners, and an additional award was given to the sweepstakes winner of each age/class. Sweepstakes winners won a gift certificate from HomeTown Buffet for dinner for four and a chance to appear in next year’s America’s Kids Craft and Cookbook. In the preteen category, Tyler Greek, of Ontario, took first place, while Ryan Halvorsen, of Rancho Palos Verdes, took first in the 4H class. Anthony Matranga, of Moreno Valley, took the sweepstakes award in the teen class. Judges included Jay Ma for the preteen class, Jerry Tanfey and Scott Dreker for the 4H class and Chuck Degruffenreid and Dreker for teen sweepstakes.
