Speeding through tight turns and high drops, tumbling and swinging, and covered in bright lights, carnival rides are loud and fast, and safe. According to statistics released from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) mobile-amusement rides are one of the safest recreational activities.
The mobile-amusement ride industry has high standards for safety, which have kept injuries to a minimum. The Ray Cammack Shows Carnival (RCS), which will return to the L.A. County Fair for its 20th year, is a leader in the carnival entertainment industry. The impeccable safety record of RCS and their top-quality equipment inspections combined with a professional presentation and more than 70 spectacular rides and attractions has made them the L.A. County Fair’s carnival of choice. According to RCS they conduct more than 5,000 hours of safety training for employees a year, and spend more than $175,000 a year on drug and alcohol testing. Guy Leavitt, president and CEO of RCS, said, “Our employees’ children ride these rides, so you can be confident that safety is a priority.” Computerized inspections of all rides are conducted daily. Also, all RCS rides are inspected during setup and take down.
The Outdoor Amusement Business Association estimates that nearly 500 million people visit fairs, carnivals and festivals annually. Yet mobile-amusement rides have one of the lowest annual injury rates for a recreational activity, with about 3,000 injuries annually with less than one percent of that figure requiring overnight hospitalization. According to the CPSC, fishing, sledding, swimming pools, volleyball, and many other activities account for tens of thousands more injuries a year than mobile-amusement rides. For instance, bicycles annually account for about 500,000 injuries treated at hospital emergency rooms; playground equipment accounts for about 200,000 injuries; soccer accounts for nearly 174,000 injuries.
The Fair runs from Sept. 10-26, 2004. For general information on the L.A. County Fair, call (909) 623-3111 or visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com.
