A commemorative September 11 quilt honoring the memory of fallen firefighters, police officers and border patrol will be on display at the L.A. County Fair, Sept. 10-26. It is located in Fairplex 4. The 23-foot-long quilt was contributed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, the La Crescenta Sheriff’s station and local community members and small businesses in the La Crescenta area. During the year, the quilt is displayed at Dexter Park, near Valencia, and Crescenta Valley Park in La Crescenta. The quilt began as a community project started by county employees Aurora Paredes and Kathy Jiles soon after the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy. They gathered members of the community to research the names of officers and sew quilt. The efforts were recognized in 2001 by county supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Michael Antonovich. Supervisor Gloria Molina asked that it be displayed at the Fair this year. The Fair holds an annual Quilt Show in its A Tapestry of Tradition exhibit. For more information at the L.A. County Fair, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com or call (909) 623-3111.
