It’s 17 consecutive days of live thoroughbred horse racing, increased purses for the stakes races and immeasurable returns for patrons.
Fairplex Park’s 66th meeting presents 17 consecutive days of live horse racing during the 2004 L.A. County Fair, scheduled for Sept. 10 through Sept. 26. Fairplex Park will offer one stakes race every day beginning on opening day, Friday, Sept. 10. Seventeen stakes races are slated and purses have been increased over 2003 figures.  The $100,000 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap, slated for Sunday,

The Pomona Derby on Saturday, Sept. 25 (3-year-olds, 1-1/8 miles), and the Las Madrinas Handicap on Friday, Sept. 24 (3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, 1-1/16 miles), will each offer guaranteed purses of $100,000.       Two 6 - 1/2  furlong events for 2-year-olds carry estimated purses of $120,000. The Barretts Debutante for fillies is set for Saturday, Sept. 18, followed by the Barretts Juvenile for colts and geldings on Sunday, Sept. 19. Both are for 2-year-olds sold at the Barretts Equine Sales Complex at Fairplex.
The Phil D. Shepherd Stakes on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1-1/16 miles is a $60,000 guaranteed stakes race. The Foothill Stakes has opening day honors and the Bustles & Bows Stakes is slated for Thursday, Sept. 16. Both races are 6-1/2 furlongs with guaranteed purses of $60,000.  The Shepherd and Johnston are 1-1/16-mile tests for 3-year-olds and up, while the Foothill will go at 6-½ furlongs. The Johnston is targeted toward fillies and mares.
The remaining nine stakes races will carry guaranteed purses of $60,000, up from $50,000 last year. All told, more than $4 million in purse money, including $1.24 million for 17 thoroughbred stakes events, will be offered.
