Rich Le Fevre, 60, of Las Vegas stands at a modest 5 feet 6 inches and 139 pounds, and is proving that size does not matter.
Le Fevre claimed the Winchell’s World Donut-Eating Championship title Sept. 22 at the L.A. County Fair. Contestants included professional eaters, and college students. Le Fevre consumed 42 donuts in eight minutes setting a new world record. His wife Caroline ate 30 donuts just a few seats away and was barely edged out of third place by Jed Donahue of Orange County who ate 31. Eric Badlands Booker of New York took second with 36 donuts.
Le Fevre took home $1,500 and a trophy along with a full stomach. He stood throughout the competition tearing glazed donuts in half and dipping them in coffee before shoving each piece to the side of his mouth. Le Fevre said the only time he has been sick after a contest was when he ate six pounds of Spam during a competition.
The Fair runs through Sept. 26. For general information on the L.A. County Fair, call (909) 623-3111 or visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com.
