The Darrell Russell Memorial Auction will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Hospitality Village at Pomona Raceway. The silent and live auctions will benefit the Darrell Russell Memorial Fund, established after Top Fuel driver Russell’s untimely death in June. Organizers Larry Dixon, a two-time Top Fuel champion, and his wife, Allison, have lined up a great selection of auction items. The auction will be held at the conclusion of professional qualifying for the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. The silent auction will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. The live portion will be from 6 to 9 p.m. For people wishing to attend the auction but not the race, NHRA will open admission gates at 4:30 p.m., said Dixon. Russell was fatally injured June 27 as a result of a crash during race eliminations at an NHRA National Event at Gateway International Raceway. Russell, 35, of Hockley, Texas, was competing in the second round of eliminations when his dragster went out of control and crashed just past the finish line. During his four-year career he had earned six victories in 17 final rounds. He posted a career-best fourth place points finish in 2003 and was fourth in the Top Fuel points standings prior to his death. The Dixons have gathered an impressive list of auction items. There’s a General Motors big block Chevrolet crate motor, various bashed-up body panels from the NASCAR rides of Casey Mears, Sterling Marlin, Greg Biffle and Mark Martin, two of Russell’s firesuits, Kenny Bernstein’s one-of-a-kind Budweiser driving suit, Shirley Muldowney’s “Last Pass” leather jacket from her retirement tour, plus other items like an autographed guitar from Van Halen and a collection of Oakley watches. Donations can be made directly to the fund at Darrell Russell Memorial Fund, Partners Bank of Texas, P.O. Box 60369, Houston, TX, 77205.
