A 13-year-old Alhambra girl’s design of farm animals sitting amongst a Ferris wheel and crates of produce won the top prize in the L.A. County Fair’s 2005 Design a Float contest. Vivien Wu’s design will help the Fair’s exhibits department and Fiesta Floats create the concept for this year’s float. The float will grace the route of the Fair’s Community Days parades in September and the Hollywood Christmas Parade in November.
Vivien, who was the first place winner of last year’s float contest, did an excellent job of portraying the theme, “Agriculture at the Fair,” in her design. Besides incorporating her design in the Fair float, Vivien also received a lap top computer. Vivien is a student at San Gabriel Christian School.
Second place winner was Shannon Cowe of Monrovia. She received an iPod. Third place went to Jacques Diec of El Monte, who received a $200 gift certificate to Best Buy. Angeline Kajohn of Glendora took fourth place and was awarded a $150 gift certificate. In fifth place was Sarah O’Dell of La Verne, who received a $75 gift certificate.
Renditions of the designs are available online. In addition to the float competition, the Fair is hosting a marching band competition to be held during the Fair. The winner will march in the Hollywood Christmas Parade. The L.A. County Fair runs Sept. 9 – Oct. 2, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred horse racing returns Sept. 9 – 26, closed on Tuesdays only. For more information, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com.
