The 8th edition of the Goodguys Pomona Nitro Nationals, August 5-7 at Pomona Raceway will feature drag racing stars both on track and off, a rod & custom show & shine and a bustling manufacturers midway creating an atmosphere similar to what Southern California drag racing fans witnessed on a weekly basis at tracks like Lions Drag Strip, Orange County International Raceway and Irwindale. The 250mph excitement will be provided by the Nostalgia Top Fuel and Nostalgia Funny Car competitors as they take to the track both Friday and Saturday for both afternoon and night time qualifying sessions. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday. Fans will be taken back to the golden era of Southern California drag racing as flame belching, ground pounding front engined top fuelers and sleek, evil looking vintage funny cars – on full loads of nitromethane fuel - charge down the quarter mile at legendary Pomona Raceway. Literally hundreds of competitors will vie for event titles in fourteen racing classes throughout the three day event.
Carlsbad, California’s Ron Capps, driver of the Don Schumacher Racing Brut Funny Car on the prestigious NHRA/PowerAde circuit, will compete at the Pomona Nitro Nationals, driving the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Nostalgia Funny Car of Riverside’s Jeff Gaynor. Veteran Southern California Funny Car racer and tuner Dale Pulde will serve as crew chief for the Capps/Gaynor charge. Capps will face stiff competition from Sylmar’s Dan Horan Junior who currently leads the Goodguys/VRA points chase as well as Larry Petit in the “Crazy Horse” 1970 Mustang. A field of 10 to 12 Nostalgia Funny Cars are expected to attempt qualification runs for the 8-car field.
Southern California Funny Car Legend Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen will join Dave McClelland – known worldwide as “The Voice of Drag Racing” for his 35-plus years as drag racing announcer and television host, will make celebrity appearances at the Nitro Nationals. Goodguys will honor the duo as the event’s “Hot Rod Heroes,” presenting both with awards for their contributions to the world of high speed hot rodding. There will be an autograph signing session Saturday, August 6th at 1:00pm and a starting line award presentation Sunday, August 7th prior to final eliminations.
The spacious Pomona Raceway pit area will transform into a rod & custom “show & shine” featuring mega dollar 1972 & earlier customized street rods, chopped, dropped and rusted out “rat rods”, low slung custom cars, mega muscle cars and tricked out trucks. An expansive Manufacturer’s Midway will offer the latest and greatest in retail rodding regalia.
Qualifying and time trials are on tap for Friday and Saturday with special 8pm night qualifying both evenings for the Nostalgia Top Fuel and Nostalgia Funny Cars and other professional categories. The popular “Marcellus & Borsch” Fuel Altered – a 1960s Southern California favorite - will make hair-raising, 200mph exhibition runs both Friday and Saturday evenings under the lights as well. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, beginning at 10am.
