The L.A. County Fair knows when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em – and it’s looking for some card players who can do the same. Fairplex Park, home to the Fair’s annual horse racing meet, will host a Texas Hold’em-style poker tournament on Thursdays, Sept. 15 and 22, during the Fair. Proceeds will benefit the Fairplex Education Foundation. Dates for the 2005 L.A. County Fair are Sept. 9-Oct. 2, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred horse racing returns Sept. 9-26, closed on Tuesdays only.
The poker tourney is scheduled as two separate events, one on each day. Each tournament will have a maximum of 300 players. Three groups of 100 players will compete on 10 tables with 10 players. A finalist will emerge from each table, therefore 10 finalists are created from each round, and a maximum of 30 finalists will compete for the grand prize.
A registered player will receive free admission to the Fair, a $10 cash voucher to play the horse races during the tournament day, a free buffet lunch, a signature sports bag, and two decks of cards with the Fairplex Park logo. All 30 finalists will receive an iPod Mini. The champions, one from each tournament, will receive airfare and accommodations for three days and two nights at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and a 42” plasma, HD flat-screen television with receiver.
There is a $100 buy-in. For more information or mail-in registration, call (909) 865-4090 or send to Fairplex Poker Tourney, PO Box 2250, Pomona, 91769. Make checks payable to the Fairplex Education Foundation. The Fairplex Education Foundation offers educational opportunities to surrounding communities during the Fair and year-round.
Registrations for the tournament are accepted on a first-come priority basis. For a complete list of rules and regulations and to register online, visit the Web site www.lacountyfair.com. /b.js
