For more than 30 years, Daryl Hall and John Oates have been enticing audiences with their Philly soul sound with hits like “Sara Smile” and “She’s Gone.” The duo are bringing their well-known sound to the L.A. County Fair’s End of Summer Concert Series, presented by Toyota, Friday, Sept. 23.
The pair met in college in Philadelphia in the ‘60s and have been creating distinctive songs ever since. They recently released Our Kind of Soul, a collection of 14 classic R&B hits and three new songs. Hall & Oates began in earnest in 1975 with the hit “Sara Smile.” The duo got its first number one hit in 1977 with “Rich Girl.”
Their success heated up in 1980 with a string of hits including a remake of the Righteous Brothers’ “You Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Kiss on My List,” “You Make My Dreams” and “Private Eyes.” Their biggest hit single, “Maneater,” came from the album H2O, which sold more than two million copies.
The Recording Industry Association labeled Hall & Oates the most successful duo in rock history, earning a total of 19 gold and platinum albums. The two have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and they’ve continued to influence a new generation of singers. Among the artists who have sampled or covered music by Hall & Oates are Boyz II Men, Missy Elliott and rappers B Legit, Heavy D and De La Soul.
The L.A. County Fair is thrilled to have Hall & Oates perform here for the first time.
