What would a county fair be without a chance for the casual gourmand to whet his or her appetite with something gooey, fried or on a stick? Rest assured, the L.A. County Fair is here to serve.
Ripe with the usual food – corn dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, hamburgers – the Fair each year offers an array of new and delicious (we won’t mention calories) concoctions that can’t be missed. The past few years have seen the debut of what we collectively call the Deep Frieds – Twinkies, snickers, Oreos, pickles. Each year has brought a new innovation. This year it’s deep-fried avocados and tomatoes. Imagine a buttery avocado fried in a beer batter – delightful! For the sweet tooth, it’s deep-fried apples with real whipped cream. Remember, an apple a day…
Other new sensations: churros filled with chocolate, loaded homemade potato chips (add toppings just like a baked potato), Marble Top ice cream and Italian gelato ice. The Fair is synonymous with food on a stick – makes it easy to eat and walk around enjoying the sights at the same time. Try a cream puff on a stick – yummy. There is the ever-popular hot dog on a stick, pork chop on a stick, frozen banana on a stick – whew! Keeping the stick manufacturer happy, happy, happy.
For the truly serious I’ve-Got-To-Watch-My-Diet, there is plenty of sensible fare. Fruit and salads are plentiful, too.
There is even I-Can’t-Believe-I’m-At-A-County-Fair cuisine. Exquisitely prepared dishes from top chefs can be found at restaurants Las Costillas de Sancho, the Vineyard Market, Top of the Park or Avalon.
The L.A. County Fair – it’s a great place to experience the Kinder.Simpler.Funner. and sumptuous side of life. Fair dates are Sept. 9 – Oct. 2, closed Mondays and Tuesday. Live thoroughbred horse racing returns Sept. 9 – 26, closed on Tuesdays only. For more information, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com or call (909) 623-3111. china
