A fair would not be complete without the traditional foods. This year’s L.A. County Fair, which runs Sept. 13-29, will offer that and much more. The variety of food offered is enough to please even the pickiest of eaters.
Fair concessions will offer nearly 300 food stands, with 56 different owners, and almost 3,000 different food items to choose from.
Fairguests can choose from traditional foods on a stick like corn dogs, cheese and candy apples. Strawberries and other assorted fruits on a stick will also be offered. Or Fairguests can sample the new beef stick, which looks like a corn dog but uses salami beef instead of a hot dog. Teriyaki chicken, Italian sausage and cookies will be offered as well. Try the new deep-fried Snickers Bar. This delightful item is frozen, dipped in sweet corn dog-style batter and deep-fried. Health nuts can have their cake and eat it too with chocolate dipped dried fruit, or tickle their palate with cotton candy and pickles.
For those who want to spoil their appetites, a number of sweets and delights will be offered. Savor the warm weather while cooling down with some soft serve ice cream from Gold Mark Concessions. Chocolate lovers rejoice in the chocolate dipped fudge and chocolate covered tortillas called sopapillas. Krispy Kreme will offer their traditional glazed donuts and an assorted variety while Texas Donuts compete with their own donuts. Or sweeten your mouth with mouthwatering Kettle Corn.
At the Fair for the first time will be Monterey Bay Seafood, whose stand will also have seating. Owner Richard Mendrala and his 90-year-old mother will be heading up this stand. Marie Theresa Mendrala, an Italian-born Calabasas resident, turned 90 this year on June 16 during the Del Mar Fair, which held a huge celebration for her. Known as Mother Mendrala, she runs the stand and loves to cook. Richard Mendrala says that Mother Mendrala will cook pasta for anyone at the drop of a hat. “She really cracks the whip,” he says. Mother Mendrala sets up the work schedules and day-to-day operations. Mother Mendrala enjoys a single glass of red wine everyday, and is very excited to be joining the L.A. Co
