The Forest Foundation is bringing California’s forests to the L.A. County Fair Sept. 13-29. The “Walk in the Woods” interactive exhibit provides children and adults alike – especially those in urban areas who may never have experienced the great outdoors – the chance to learn about the forest landscape, the animals who live there and the connection between this natural resource and our everyday lives.
Thousands of school children, families and others are expected to tour the “Walk in the Woods” exhibit at the Fair. The exhibit is part of America’s Kids Camp Wilderness. Each year America’s Kids offers children the opportunity to show off their talents and participate in fun and educational attractions. Camp Wilderness is the L.A. County Fair’s version of summer camp. Children and adults will explore majestic forests, discover woodland creatures, learn about the environment, learn survival skills, find out how to save local forests and much, much more.
Through the “Walk in the Woods” multi-media exhibit you are transported to a forest environment complete with wildlife images, birds and animal calls, babbling brooks, and the sound of wind and rain. Learn how Native Americans first used fire to manage forests. Discover the variety of products manufactured from wood – everything from church pews and incense to rayon clothing and medicine. Peek inside a life-like tree stump to find out how to identify tree species. Or create a forest management plan, deciding what trees to harvest and learning about the many laws that govern California’s forests – the most protected in the world.
“Sharing this experience with children is vital to their appreciation of the world in which they live and one they may not get a chance to experience firsthand,” said Cheryl Rubin, vice president of communications for The Forest Foundation. Providing that opportunity is one of the main goals of The Forest Foundation, which educates Californians about how our forests are managed in a way that provides the wood products we rely on while protecting plant and animal habitats and delivering clean water.
