Every spring a gathering of the finest palates in the world assemble in a little corner of Los Angeles County to evaluate the legs, body and intensity of thousands of domestic and international wines. The ensuing scrutiny can result in catapulting a little known winery to worldwide fame or reiterate the staying power of a traditional label.
With great pride, the L.A. County Fair announces May 17 – 19 as the dates of its 67th annual Wines of the World competition at the Millard Sheets Gallery on the grounds of the Fair, located in Pomona, California. The prestigious event represents the highest in professional tasting enfused with levity and comraderie – a wonderful experience that celebrates the culture of wine.
The competition has grown considerably in the past few years, making it not only the oldest but one of the largest wine competitions globally, and drawing entries from countries such as Japan, New Zealand and Australia. More than 4,000 wines were entered in 2005; expectations are even greater for ’06. Richard Sands, president of Constellation wines, will receive the 2006 Lifetime Achievement award.
In conjunction with the wine competition, the Fair’s Olive Oils of the World competition will also be held and the second annual Chefs on the Rise, recognizing the finest young chefs in the L.A. market.
