IGGY PUGLISI, LAFFIT, WINNER: "There was just a lot of trouble in the race. My horse ran super. He didn't do anything wrong. When we got to about the 3/16, horses started to bunch up together and it's a tight race track. I was sitting right behind them (the bunched horses). I was just hoping nobody would check too hard and I'd have to stop. So once we got past that trouble point, I just kind of angled him outside and he just cut after those horses. He ran a super race."
PAUL ATKINSON, A TO Z, SECOND: "I had a little trouble on the first turn. A couple horses kind of spread the turn a little but my horse seemed to recover nice and he ran hard. I thought he put in a very good effort."
FRANK OLIVARES, LAFFIT, WINNER: "I felt we could win this race. We were routing the horse at Del Mar but he just got to showing too much speed so we went back to sprinting him, and that sprint race the other day (Aug. 28) really set him up for this race, so we'll just keep sprinting him. He'll probably be a top sprinter."
NOTE: Olivares said the horse is named for jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. by the owner, James Whyte, who's in the resorts development business. Whyte is from Vancouver, Canada. /b.js>
