THREE DERBY CONTENDERS PURCHASED AT BARRETTS EQUINE LIMITED

For a horse owner, trainer and jockey it is the ultimate reward. The horse is the vehicle, the critical equation that makes it all happen.

Barretts Equine Limited, located at Fairplex in Pomona, California, owned and operated by the Los Angeles County Fair Association, can boast this year that three of its 2005 Barretts March Sale graduates are top contenders in the 2006 Kentucky Derby. While the facility has seen thousands of its horses reach winner’s circles, a victory in the Kentucky Derby has been elusive.

All eyes will be on the field of 20, including 3-year-olds Brother Derek, Point Determined and Sinister Minister, all 2005 Barretts graduates.

A variety of horses are offered during the six sales that Barretts conducts annually, with the prestigious March sale attracting a large contingent of national and international buyers. The sale prices are as varied as the selection, as evidenced by the three that will be running in the Derby on May 6. Brother Derek was purchased for $275,000; Point Determined, $750,000; and Sinister Minister, $40,000. Although on the first Saturday in May, they will be competing with the fervor of million dollar colts.

Jerry McMahon, Barretts president and general manager said, “Virtually everyone in the thoroughbred racing industry has a goal of being associated with a Derby contender. For our sale ring in Pomona to have produced three top prospects is a remarkable achievement. The Barretts staff along with the entire Los Angeles County Fair Association will be eagerly watching the outcome.”
