POMONA, Calif., Sept. 15--David and Holly Wilson's Spunky Gal made her Fairplex Park debut a winning one on Sunday, capturing the $50,000-guaranteed E.B. Johnston Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths over Lookn Mighty Fine. Spunky Gal, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Runaway Groom, paid $6.80 as the favorite in the field of seven older fillies and mares and covered 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.96 under high weight of 122 pounds and jockey Scott Stevens. The winner, trained by Vladimir Cerin who was in Kentucky attending a sale, earned $27,500 for her fourth win from 11 career starts. Chastity Belle was third, three lengths behind Lookn Mighty Fine and a nose in front of Sister Patricia. Bold Roberta and Happy Michelle completed the order of finish. Revillew Slew and Demidoll were scratched. Spunky Gal survived a foul claim by jockey Felipe Martinez, who rode early leader Happy Michelle. He alleged interference on the far turn but after viewing reruns of the race, the stewards dismissed the claim.
