A 14-year-old Monrovia girl’s design of people enjoying the Fair and its surroundings won the top prize in the L.A. County Fair’s 2006 Design a Float contest. Shannon Cowe’s design will help the Fair’s exhibits department and Fiesta Floats create the concept for this year’s float. The float will grace the route of the Fair’s Community Days parades in September and the Hollywood Christmas Parade in November. Shannon, who was the second place winner of last year’s float contest, did an excellent job of portraying the theme, “My Day at the Fair,” in her design. Besides incorporating her design in the Fair float, Shannon also received a $1,000 Visa gift card. Shannon will be in ninth grade at Maranatha High School in Pasadena. Second place winner was Vianna Lo, 11, of La Verne, a student at Ramona Middle School. She received a $500 Visa gift card. Third place went to 14-year-old Cynthia Ruiz of Glendale, who received a $300 Visa gift card. The competition, which was open to middle school-aged students throughout Southern California, received an impressive number of entries this year – more than 220. Renditions of the designs are available online. In addition to the float competition, the Fair is hosting a marching band competition to be held weekdays during the Fair. The winner, who will be chosen on Sept. 29, will march in the Hollywood Christmas Parade. The L.A. County Fair runs Sept. 8 – Oct. 1, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred horse racing returns Sept. 8 – 25, closed on Tuesdays only. For more information, visit the Web site at www.lacountyfair.com. rc=h
