A red wine took the Best Wine award at the 2007 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition. Silver Stone Wines’ Tempranillo, Paso Robles, 2004 won the top honors from 3,785 wines entered. The results were announced June 16 at the Wine & Cars Under the Stars gala, presented by Ralphs, at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. Best wine, limited production, was Paradise Ridge Winery’s Zinfandel, Hoenselaars Vineyard, Russian River, 2005.
York Mountain Winery, Albarino, Edna Valley, 2005, took best white wine. Best sparkling wine went to Carpenè Malvolti, Prosecco di Conegliano di Valdobbiadene DOC, 2006; best sparkling wine limited production was Borgo Maragliano, Moscato d’Asti, La Caliera, 2005; best white wine limited production – Hart Winery, Sauvignon Blanc, Temecula Valley, 2006; best rose wine – Folie á Deux, Menage a Trois, California, 2005; best late harvest wine – See Ya Later Ranch, Ice Wine, Okanagan Valley, VQA, 2005; best natural fruit wine – Alba Vineyard, Raspberry, American; best dessert wine – Sheffield Cellars, Sweet Cream Sherry, California; best dessert wine, limited production – Ferrante Winery, Ice Wine, Vidal Blanc, Grand River Valley, 2005; best distilled product – Capovilla, Eau-de-Vie, Raspberry, Rosa, Italy.
The Best Tequila of the spirits competition was El Tesoro de Don Felipe from Mexico. In the Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition, best extra virgin olive oil – domestic delicate went to Savor Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Arbequina, Central Coast; best extra virgin olive oil – domestic medium to Clos Pepe Estate, Central Coast Blends, Santa Rita Hills; best extra virgin olive oil – domestic robust to Pasolivo, Central Coast Blends, Paso Robles; best extra virgin olive oil – international delicate to Mas Des Bories Salon de Provence, France: best extra virgin olive oil – international medium to Oleo De La Marchia Central Italy, Ancona, Marche; best extra virgin olive oil – international robust Frantoi Celletti & Cultivar – Bosana Italy, Islands, Sardegna; best flavored olive oil Pasolivo, Tangerine.
The olive oil and wine & spirits competitions were held in May at Fairplex in Pomona, home of the L.A. County Fair.
