L.A. COUNTY FAIR HONORS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH OF ARTIST MILLARD SHEETS WITH FINE ART EXHIBIT This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of noted artist, designer and educator Millard Sheets (1907-1989), who played a pivotal role as director of the Fine Arts exhibition at the L.A. County Fair from 1931 to 1956. In honor of the anniversary, the Fair is organizing a retrospective exhibition entitled A Tapestry of Life: The World of Millard Sheets in the aptly named Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.
The exhibition is being directed the artist’s son Tony Sheets and curated by art historian Janet Blake, who has been studying Sheets’ work since 1981. The dates for the exhibition are concurrent with the L.A. County Fair dates, Sept. 7 to Sept. 30 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). The exhibition is free with Fair admission.
This art experience is a unique and educational retrospect of the periods of Millard Sheets’ life as seen through the world of art in conjunction with the national and international events that have taken place in the last century. A dynamic and interactive timeline will feature a journey from Sheets’ first entry of a painting in the 1925 Fair fine art exhibition to his last interview with the Smithsonian Institution.
Sheets was a prolific artist, a keen business man and a heart-felt observer of the world around him. He covered World War II as an art correspondent for Life Magazine. He also traveled extensively, learning about and documenting the diverse cultures he encountered. His trips to Europe inspired him to draw the architecture he observed. He created mosaics and murals. He painted in oil, acrylic and watercolor. His artwork hung in the White House. He led the art department at Claremont’s Scripps College, as well as serving as director of the Fine Art exhibition for the Fair.
Join us for this dynamic exhibition that will not only explore, in depth, the artist’s prodigious and extensive career, both as a painter and as a designer, but chronicles the last hundred years of world events that affected our lives. You will walk away from this vibrant exhibition at the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at Fairplex with a strong connection between the artist, his art and the world.
