The past year was a year rich in numbers: 116,000 school children enjoyed the FairKids field trips, 700 students took classes at the Career and Technical Education Center, 75,000 Fairguests explored Our Body: The Universe Within, Finish Line Sports Grill served more than 7,700 tacos during Taco Tuesdays and more than 3,100 wines were entered into the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition.
The past year saw the debut of The Learning Centers (TLC) at Fairplex. Evolving from the long-standing Foundations at Fairplex, TLC encompasses the Child Development Center (CDC), the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC), Fairtime Education, Junior Fair Board and the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts.
With this change, the Los Angeles County Fair Association refocused its commitment to education and strengthened its relevance to the community, making it even more central to our not-for-profit business model. Vocational training programs at CTEC grew with students from the region learning everything from fleet maintenance to water treatment at no cost. In an economy where job creation is a priority, CTEC is training the workforce of tomorrow and giving local youth new opportunities to support themselves and their families.
Fairplex continued to show its dedication to the community by holding informational sessions for the neighbors. Exploring topics such as future development projects, construction updates and upcoming Fair attractions, Fairplex staff further opened its communication channels with the neighboring communities. Additionally, we welcomed nearly 200 neighbors and children to the first-ever holiday cookie decorating party in December.
The talented and professional staff of executives, managers and employees is to be commended for its dedication. We thank our board of directors and members of the Association for their everlasting involvement, leadership and support. Also, we owe a big thank-you to our supporters, volunteers and donors in the community and beyond. Together, they are the driving force of all that we do and their vision and commitment are to be saluted. We proudly submit a look at 2010.
