San Dimas community spirit hits the streets, walkways and stages of the L.A. County Fair Friday, Sept. 10, during the annual San Dimas Day festivities. From saluting the city’s community heroes to cheering on the local schools and organizations in a parade to watching the ponies run in San Dimas’ honor, the day is fun for all.
Since it is your city’s day, don’t pay full price to join the fun at the Fair. San Dimas residents, employees and friends can receive a buy one, get one free admission coupon from various locations in the city. Then, the fun starts at 2:40 p.m. at Fairplex Park where the Race of the Day is named in honor of San Dimas. Don’t forget to stop by the Community Expo, where San Dimas businesses, civic and community organizations will fill Pepper Street with booths offering information and goodies.
At 5 p.m., line the Fair parade route and cheer on local civic organizations, schools and community groups as they march down Broadway. Taking a prominent place in the parade are the town’s Community Heroes.
The young adult hero is Andrew Valenzuela. Andrew is a graduate of Damien High School and a volunteer at the San Dimas Senior Center. He has volunteered more than 300 hours at the center. He also volunteers at St. Louise Church’s Bingo to raise funds for church programs. He will be a freshman at Pitzer College, and exemplifies the hard work, dedication and character of the youth in San Dimas.
Adult heroes are Susan and John Davis. Susan is the president of the Wednesday Afternoon Club and the archivist for the San Dimas Historical Society. John has served on the board of the Festival of Arts and mans the beverage concession at all events. He also serves on the Planning Commission. Both Susan and John are active in Westerners and the San Dimas 50th Birthday committee. The couple was very involved in the opening of the Walker House.
Senior heroes are Ann and Bill Hutfless. They set the tone for volunteering with smiles on their faces. The two can be found at every Chamber of Commerce event. They man the front table at Taste of the Town and also volunteer at Western Days and for the Festival of Arts. For the recent open houses for the Walker House the couple worked all four days. And for the past 10 years they’ve tirelessly worked with the Ms. Rodeo California Pageant. They radiate the philosophy of volunteerism in the city. The three heroes will be feted at the Community Heroes Celebration at 5:30 p.m. at the Pepper Street Stage.
