FONTANA CELEBRATES COMMUNITY AT THE L.A. COUNTY FAIR
Fontana Day is Sept. 19

Each year the L.A. County Fair honors Community Heroes – seniors, adults and young adults – from 19 surrounding Inland Valley cities during the 23 days of the Fair, Sept. 5 – Oct. 4. Saturday, Sept. 19 is Fontana Day at the Fair, a day for celebrating volunteers, humanitarians, students, neighbors and community organizations working to make their city a better place to live for everyone.

Fontana Day festivities include a parade down Broadway and a presentation on the Pepper Street Stage honoring Fontana’s community heroes.

Taking top billing in the parade is Luis Ruiz, Fontana’s young adult community hero. Ruiz is a member of the National Honor Society, ROTC and is a volunteer at Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center. “There is something about Luis that makes him special to all who meet him,” said Donna Jones, assistant director of Kaiser Volunteer Services, who nominated Ruiz. “We at Kaiser are very fortunate to have him on our staff.”

Joining Ruiz is Rod Jones, Fontana’s adult community hero. A member of Rotary Club of Fontana, Jones has for the last three years coordinated an annual trip to Pass Christian, Mississippi to help Hurricane Katrina rebuilding efforts.

Joe Dean is Fontana’s senior community hero. He was selected for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of local veterans. He was instrumental in bringing the traveling Viet Nam Memorial Wall to Fontana. Dean, a much loved Fontana icon, has walked a postal beat for the Fontana Post Office for more than 43 years.

Fontana residents, friends, family and supporters can join their community celebration at a reduced admission price with a buy-one-get-one-free admission coupon good for Saturday, Sept. 19! Coupons are available at the Fontana Chamber of Commerce, City Hall and other community locations. Come for the Fair; stay for the community festivities: parade at 5 p.m. and hero presentation at 5:30 p.m.

The L.A. County Fair continues Wednesday – Sunday through Oct. 4, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred horse racing Sept. 10 – 28, dark Mondays Sept. 14 and 21 and Tuesdays. For information on ways to save at the Fair, visit lacountyfair.com.
