The L.A. County Fair honors Community Heroes – seniors, adults and young adults – from 19 surrounding Inland Valley cities during the 23 days of the Fair, Sept. 5 – Oct. 4. Wednesday, Sept. 9, the city of Montclair will celebrate Montclair Day at the Fair, honoring volunteers, humanitarians, students, neighbors and community organizations that work to make their city a better place to live.
Fair festivities for Montclair Day at the Fair include a 5 p.m. parade down Broadway and a presentation on the Pepper Street Stage honoring three Montclair community heroes.
Taking a prominent place in the day’s festivities is Timothy Nguyen, Montclair’s 2009 young adult community hero. Described as a “shining star in the Montclair Library’s volunteer program, Timothy has worked at the library for two summers, working diligently to do his work and look for other ways to help library staff and the public. Timothy is also an outstanding student at Montclair High in advanced placement classes. He has played on the high school basketball team and is a dedicated member of the school’s tennis team. “A naturally humble person, [Timothy] is tremendously thorough, polite, punctual, well-rounded and always has a helpful and motivating attitude.”
Joining Timothy in the Montclair community parade and on the hero’s stage is Keith Robinson, Montclair’s adult community hero. Keith has been a volunteer coach for Montclair’s youth basketball program, continuing long after his son outgrew the program. He is now coaching his granddaughter’s team. He is known for his coaching style, patiently teaching, motivating and inspiring children of all playing levels. His wife proudly displays a picture wall in their home that features photos of her husband with his many teams and the young people he has coached and mentored over the years.
Montclair’s senior community hero, Jose Dominguez, purchased a dilapidated apartment building and, despite many obstacles, pursued his vision to rehabilitate the housing units and make it a community center that would attract families and children. It is a showcase, featuring apartment units, classrooms, computer rooms and two transitional housing units with reduced rent for families in need. Jose has also worked with the City of Montclair to host a community information fair to inform residents about city services, including police, fire, human service and code enforcement.
Montclair residents, friends, family and supporters can join their community celebration at a reduced admission price! Visit your Chamber of Commerce, City Hall and other community locations for a buy-one-get-one-free admission coupon good for Wednesday, Sept. 9. Come for the Fair; stay for the community festivities: parade at 5 p.m. and hero presentation at 5:30 p.m.
The L.A. County Fair continues Wednesday – Sunday through Oct. 4, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred horse racing Sept. 10 – 28, dark Mondays Sept. 14 and 21 and Tuesdays. For information on ways to save at the Fair, visit lacountyfair.com.
