It’s all hands on deck at the L.A. County Fair as lily-livered city folk prepare to become swashbucklin’ buccaneers. So popular it’s coming back (which doesn’t happen to most pirates!), A Pirate’s Life returns to the Fair.
Shiver me timbers! It’s high-diving and comic pirate escapades with two rip-roarin’ shows. Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean set sail every Wednesday through Sunday (and Labor Day!) starting at 2 p.m. for an adventure on the high seas. The sensational Murcias family will present a unique aerial high wire show. This show promises to keep the audience in suspense as pirates suspended 30 feet in the air duel for the right to be the Captain of the Colombian Caribbean pirate ship. Step back in time with The Vagabond Pirates. These are the most fearsome and funny troupe of pirates to sail six of the seven seas. Enjoy Captain Red Eye Pete and his Band of Pirates as they wreak havoc upon those fortunate enough to experience their lively Pirate Sea Shanties, comedy and sing-alongs. Guests can participate – or walk the plank – in competitions within the show. Then, watch as two of their most blood thirsty pirates battle it out, sword to sword to determine which should be first mate.
New this year is The Misadventures of Cap’n Arrr, an interactive comedy performance that will have kids and grown-ups alike rolling on the floor with laughter. Cap’n Arrr’s sea-worthy adventure is packed full of audience participation and includes instruction on walking like a pirate, talking like a pirate and laughing like a pirate too! Learn the A-E-I-O-U’s of pirate swordsmanship and join in sing-a-longs that are so catchy you’ll be singing long after this ship has sailed.
Enroll in Cap’n Calico Jack’s Pirate Academy, where “students” will learn how to steer a pirate ship, tie knots, make their own sword, pirate hat and patch and even make a Jolly Roger. Put all that schooling to use at Ship Wreck Reef, where newly crowned pirates can dig for buried treasure. In this sunken pirate ship filled with sand, find out what booty really is. Did we say ay matey? Yes, we did, as well as Ahoy, Grog, Scurvy Dog and Landlubber. Celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day at the Fair on Sept. 19.
The L.A. County Fair opens Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 – 7 and then Wednesday – Sunday, Sept. 9 – Oct. 4, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Live thoroughbred racing Sept. 10 – 28, dark Mondays Sept. 14 and 21 and Tuesdays. For information about ways to save at the Fair, visit www.lacountyfair.com.
