Pomona community spirit hits the streets, walkways and stages of the L.A. County Fair Friday, Sept. 11, during the annual Pomona Day festivities. From saluting the city’s community heroes to cheering on the local schools and organizations in a parade to watching the ponies run in Pomona’s honor, the day is fun for all.
Since it is your city’s day, don’t pay full price to join the fun at the Fair. Pomona residents, employees and friends can receive a buy one, get one free admission coupon from various locations in the city. Then, the fun starts at 2:40 p.m. at Fairplex Park where the Race of the Day is named in honor of Pomona. Don’t forget to stop by the Community Expo, where Pomona businesses, civic and community organizations will fill Pepper Street with booths offering information and goodies.
At 5 p.m., line the Fair parade route and cheer on local civic organizations, schools and community groups as they march down Broadway. Taking a prominent place in the parade are the town’s Community Heroes. The young adult hero is Yasmin Rodriguez, a member of Pomona Police Explorer Post 160. The 17-year-old Ganesha High School student has been a police explorer for two year. She is a role model for young girls who make positive choices. As an explorer, she assists with crime prevention, Neighborhood Watch activities, National Night Out and Community Engagement Camp Out. Yasmin’s career plan is to become a Pomona police officer.
The Pomona adult hero is Virginia Madrigal. Virginia has the heart of the community in her actions. She had taken a stand against violence and supported neighborhood and police efforts to encourage youth to stay away from gangs. She is co-chair of the Community Engagement Group, a member of the Optimist club, the Youth and Family Master Plan steering committee and Project Sister. She is involved with her church and loves to spend time with her family.
Senior hero is Eloise Mays. Eloise was nominated for her undying efforts to comfort and feed the less fortunate in the city of Pomona. She is a member of the Willie White Park Focus Group, P.A.C.T., Macedonia Baptist Church, where she is the coordinator for food, the Pomona Christian Center, the National Council of Negro Women – Pomona Chapter, and a volunteer at the Pomona Juvenile Court.
The three heroes will be feted at the Community Heroes Celebration at 5:30 p.m. at the Pepper Street Stage.
