MARTIN PEDROZA INDUCTED 2009 FAIRPLEX PARK HALL OF FAME

The first time Martin Pedroza saw Fairplex Park, it was in the early 1980s, when he was a young jockey not long removed from his native Panama.  "Geez," Pedroza said.  "What is this?"

For more than 20 years, the familiar phrasing of world-renowned track announcer Trevor Denman has wafted through the Fairplex Park grandstand, inviting newcomers and experienced handicappers alike to enjoy the exciting sport of horse racing in an intimate, family-friendly setting. Watch the jockeys mount up in the cozy saddling paddock, pick your favorite runner in the colorful post parade, then get ready to cheer your horse home to the finish. At Fairplex Park, you won’t miss a minute of the hoof-pounding action, whether you watch the races from the comfort of a box seat or even standing by the rail as the field thunders past you. No binoculars required here!

Second place went to Steve Meyer of Idaho and third place went to Mike Mayo of Texas. Peter and Mike both qualified for the 2010 HHC Final in Las Vegas since Mr. Meyer had previously qualified.

September 18 Contest
In a driving finish, Patrick Gianforte of Illinois and Bryan Wagner of Louisiana dead-heated for first place with a score of $240. Since both players had already qualified for the 2010 NHC final, third place finisher Sheri Sholz of nearby West Covina qualified in their placet. The sixth place finisher, Kentuckian Mark Geary also qualified for the final when all competitors in front of him had already qualified.

September 25 Contest
Residents of Idaho continued their domination of these tournaments, when Belinda De Mayo outlasted Joseph Perry of New Jersey to win with a score of $436. She qualified for the Las Vegas final event along with 3rd place finisher Hesham Ragab of Los Angeles.

Weekend Tournaments

A two-day contest will be held each weekend during the live meet (September 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27)

September 12-13 Contest

Steve Meyer completed a memorable contest weekend by hanging on to his lead despite the final race where the winner was 74-1. His score was more than double the amount of the runner-up Mark Hartshorn of Newport Beach. Mike Chiuppi of nearby Glendora finished third. Both Mark and Mike qualified for the 2010 NHC final.

September 19-20 Contest
Verina Puga continued the Gem State dominance in the weekend tournaments with a remarkable come from behind victory in the final race on Sunday to finish with a score of $1,625, which was almost $500 higher than runner-up David Nance of San Gabriel. Both Verina and David qualified for the 2010 NHC Final at the Red Rock Casino.

September 20-27 Contest
When a 33-1 shot finished second in the final race, both victorious Californian Tom Noone and runner up Judy Wagner of Louisiana bypassed Mark Streiff who led most of the day. The runner up finish by Judy put her at the top of the leader board in the NHC Tour standings. NHC Final qualifiers were both Californians: 6th place finished Jim O’Nail of nearby Chino and 8th place finisher Duke Matties.
